St. Michael's Memorial Windows
(See also interior panorama)

In St. Michael's, there are a number of stained glass memorial windows, the details of which can be seen below. Starting in the north west corner, they are

(1) The three light stained glass window
(2) The Crisp Memorial Window (Jacob's Ladder)
(3) The Levi Memorial Window
(4) The Burston Memorial Window
(5) The Children's Window
(6) The Barr Smith Memorial or Morris Window
(7) The R. H. Pearman Memorial
(8) The Charles B Hardy Memorial Window

window 1(1) The rear three light stained glass western window, in  cathedral glass was a gift from Mrs. L. G. Browne in 1896.

window 1(2) The Jacob's Ladder Window is a memorial to Douglas B Crisp and his wife Dorothy, and was dedicated in 1981. The window was crafted by Cedar Prest, an Adelaide Glass Artist. The dedication of this window states  "AMDG IN MEMORY OF DOUGLAS BERTRAM CRISP AND DOROTHY ALICE CRISP".  The cobalt blue glass figure is fashioned from Morris glass, and the light blue glass above it has a highly opalescent effect if viewed at sunset.

window 3(3) The Levi Window is based on a very famous painting by William Holman Hunt, titled "The Light of the World" which hangs in St. Paul's Cathedral.

window 4(4) The Burston Window is a memorial to Sir Samuel and Lady Burston, and was dedicated in 1961.

window 5(5) This window, sometimes known as the "Children's Window", was dedicated in October 1900, and shows Christ in the Temple. The Sunday School children collected money for this window over three years.

On entering St. Michael's Church in the morning, ones eyes are drawn up to the magnificent three-light stained glass window.  The window was a gift from Robert and Joanna Barr Smith in memory of Joanna's brother George and his wife Jane. The Barr Smiths were personal friends of the Clampetts and great supporters of St. Michael's. The  inscription reads "To the Glory of God and in loving memory of George and Jane Elder", and was designed by the famous English firm of Morris & Company, and was made by Powell & Sons, London. The centre window represents Our Lord as the Shepherd of Paradise, with a crook in His hand and standing on a mound with four streams issuing, representing the four rivers of Eden, man's first paradise. At His feet are sheep, and in the Saviour's left hand is a scroll, with the words, "There shall be one fold and one Shepherd". Underneath the figure of our Lord, which is so exquisite a work, are two angels, beautifully designed, holding a scroll, with the words, "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want". The northern light is a bold representation of Michael, the Archangel, clad as a warrior. In one hand he is holding holding scales, which help us to remember him as the Angel of Judgement for Israel. In the southern light there is a beautifully soft portrayal of the Archangel Gabriel, the Angel of the Annunciation, with pure white lilies in his hand. Above and below, in the tracery of the lower panels, are angels with traditional instruments of praise, together with foliage in rich and harmonius combination. The whole is a striking and beautiful study. The holy faces look down upon one with solemn meaning, each one speaking its own lesson, suggesting its own council, and, above all, does the Shepherd of Paradise speak of days yet to come, when 'the kingdoms of this world shall become the kingdoms of our Lord and of this Christ', when all, at last, yet all shall be gathered in.
The window was unveiled and dedicated on Advent Sunday, December 1st, 1901.

window 7(7) This is the Reginald Pearman Memorial Window. It was made by Cedar Prest, an Adelaide Glass Artist, and dedicated in 1981.

window 8(8) This memorial window to Charles B Hardy, the infant son of Charles Burton and Ellen Hardy of Springfield House, is the oldest in the church, and dates from circa 1883.
