Mission
With God’s help, we aim to build a team, with priests, lay workers and parish
council to pray, teach, preach and train for ministry. We will build on true Biblical
teaching of the Gospel to provide worship suitable for those who already belong
to the parish, and for those whom we wish to reach, eg young families and people
new to Christian faith, using liturgies, music, current technology, and personal
involvement to further God’s kingdom, while caring in love for one another. We will
look beyond traditional boundaries to reach those who are searching for meaning
in their lives.
Vision
Mitcham will become a focal point for relevant Gospel ministry and care, with a
pastor and team strong in the Word and appropriate skills.
Parish Prayer
Heavenly father,
pour down your Spirit upon your church,
grant us a new
vision of your glory,
a new experience of your power,
a new faithfulness
to your word,
and a new consecration to your service;
that through our
renewed witness,
your holy name may be glorified and your Kingdom
come.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Planning for the Future
In 2002 the parish of Mitcham adopted a Whole-of-Parish Plan in which the key
principles are God, Growth, and Guardianship.
God
Mitcham Parish is committed to taking the Good News of Jesus Christ into all
the world. As a parish community we seek to be faithful in our own life, and to be
welcoming in our outreach to others. We celebrate and affirm the importance of
preaching and teaching which is based on the Scriptures, the historical Creeds,
and the principles of the Book of Common Prayer.
Growth
We are a medium-sized parish and we are seeking to grow. We believe that
God is calling us to be a nurturing community in which newcomers and visitors
can come to experience God’s love and learn of His will for their lives. Our main
point of growth is the weekly Family Service, which is an outreach to children
and young families in the district. We have also experienced growth through
several successful Alpha courses in recent years. We are focussing our efforts to
integrate families who come to our church to celebrate Baptisms and Weddings
into the life of our faith community.
Guardianship
Thanks to the generosity of past generations, Mitcham Parish is blessed with
a beautiful and historic church building (opened for worship in 1852), spacious
grounds, and an excellent Parish Hall facility (1982). The estate of the late Ted
Smith, together with other parish endowments, supports the music program, the
maintenance of our buildings, and some of the costs associated with ministry.
The proceeds of the sale of Saint Wilfrid’s church, Torrens Park (1937 – 2003)
further strengthens the parish financial resources and enables more ministry and
outreach, and also a greater contribution to the work of the Diocese and the wider
church. The parish is committed to wise stewardship of our resources to ensure
that the mission of God will continue in Mitcham for future generations.
